Orion Advisor Services, LLC, was formed not upon identification of a market niche but out of necessity to address the needs of its sister company, a fee-only, independent RIA founded in 1989. In the late nineties, the RIA faced an impending dilemma: the firm’s growth was being constrained by its existing portfolio management platform, an off-the-shelf system which was struggling to process $1 billion in assets and over 10,000 client accounts.
